DIY Extensions - Plan to Build a House Extension

Article supplied by WikiHow

This article gives some planning advice for house extensions proposed in the UK

Steps

Contact your local authority to arrange an informal chat about what might be possible for your house extension. It may also help to look at the online planning records to see what has been achieved previously in the area.

Consult with a designer and planning agent to develop your design ideas within the framework of planning policy.

It is worth noting that some small extensions no longer require planning permission. This 'permitted development' rule allows contextual extensions of less than 3 - 4m in length from the rear of the house to be built without the planning wait or fee (building regulations approval is still required).

If you do require planning permission, get final plans drawn in CAD and submit online via the planning portal for a fast and easy application process.

A result will normally be returned from the planning department within 6 weeks. If the application is successful, then detailed drawings of the proposal can then be produced to illustrate structure, insulation, and accessibility. These drawings will be submitted for building regulations approval prior to work beginning on site.
